Types of Russian appearance: Nordid, Uralid, Baltid and others. The faces we see every day

March 9, 2018, 22:43

I was prompted to write this post by the debate about what is the Slavic type. In view of the prevailing stereotypes, most of us represent the Slavic appearance in a standard and one-sided way - our women are all beauties, which cannot be said about men who are not like polished Europeans, who are handsome all the time and generally true Aryans. The Slavic type of male appearance is perceived by many as chubby, snub-nosed, with a fairly flat face, with a weakly pronounced chin, genetically predisposed to age-related flabbiness. And is it really so? Does this stereotype apply to all types? In general, tired of stamps in the comments, so I made this post.

In this post, I want to dwell in more detail on each racial type common among the Slavs, and consider it with examples in photographs. I will give only those examples that I am more or less sure of belonging to one or another type. Often this causes difficulties, since the types in their pure form are not often found, there are much more mixed and transitional types. I also do not consider photoshopped photos of redrawn celebs here.

I'll start with the most common in Russian latitudes and in Ukraine too, Baltic racial type. From that very notorious "Slavic face".

This term was first used by the Soviet anthropologist V.V. Bunak (1922-1927) to refer to an extensive group of racial variants of Caucasians.

Baltids often have ash or blond hair, gray-blue or gray-green eyes. Soft features of a rounded face with a broad forehead, small mouth, small chin and a small, sometimes snub nose, are common to this type. Brachycephalic (round-headed, short-headed). Height: average and below average. Physique from mesomorphic to endomorphic.

A small digression. Physique terms will be found here all the time in descriptions. Here's what they mean.

Mesomorphs are distinguished by a proportional body, long arms, legs and torso. They have a broad chest and well-developed shoulder muscles. Endomorphs are small in stature and have a round body. Such people are characterized by a figure with smooth, rounded shapes, large bones, their hips are wider than their shoulders, the lower part of the body is an order of magnitude heavier than the upper. The ectomorphic body type is also called asthenic. Its representatives are distinguished by narrow hips and shoulders. The growth of such people is usually above average.

The highest concentration of the Baltic racial type is found in the Baltic countries, in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Among Ukrainians, these are the indigenous inhabitants of the Dnieper region.

Western Baltid

This racial type differs from the Baltids, its closest relatives, by not so soft facial features, the face itself is more profiled and more elongated, with a clearer chin and high cheekbones. This racial type contains a considerable Nordic component. Light pigmentation of hair and eyes, skull brachycephalic (short) or mesocephalic (medium size), straight nose of medium size. Representatives are usually medium and tall. Body type: mesomorphic to endomorphic. The Western Baltids are very often confused with the Nords, but that's not them yet.

Distributed in Central and Eastern Europe, in the Baltic countries, Belarus, northern Ukraine, Russia.

East Baltic racial type

This subtype of the Baltic race arose from the merging of the Baltids with the Lapoids. Lapoids are a small race preserved by the Saami - the indigenous population of Northern Europe (Northern Norway, Northern Finland and the Kola Peninsula). The East Baltic race is typical of the Finno-Ugric peoples, but among the Slavic and Baltic peoples it is more often represented in the form of influences. Brachycephalic and lightly pigmented with straight ash-blond hair of fine texture and grey-blue eyes. Facial features prone to flattening have a slight Mongoloid patina (since the Lappoids / Uraloids are a mestizo Caucasian-Mongoloid race): a massive lower jaw, a slightly pronounced chin, a lot of soft tissues, full cheeks, a small nose straight or with a concave back (the tip is upturned , sometimes there is a nose with potatoes), the nostrils are wide, the superciliary arches are weakened, the forehead is low. Growth is low to medium. Physique from endomorphic to mesomorphic. Women of this type are quite pretty in their youth.

The Eastern Baltids are an autochthonous population of the North-West of Russia, Northern Finland, Sweden, Norway and Lapland.

Nords (Eastern Nords)

The very name "Nordic race" was introduced by the Astrakhan-born (but having French roots) anthropologist Deniker, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in pre-revolutionary Russia. Unfortunately, subsequent Soviet anthropologists seem to have been afraid to even mention the term for political reasons. At the same time, in Nazi Germany, also for political reasons and propaganda, this term began to be attributed almost without exception only to those who corresponded to a certain ideology or ethnic group, although they did not belong to the Nordic racial type. But, we know what the entire top of the Third Reich looked like, "true Aryans"). Another misconception in this matter is that, they say, the more human, the more Nordic it is. However, as already shown above, other northern Caucasians also have light pigmentation.

Eastern Nordid - a subtype of Nordid, localized in Eastern Europe - from eastern Germany, Austria, then to the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, northern Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic countries, partly in Finland and northwest Russia.

Nordids have a thin physique (ecto / mesomorphic), their height is always high, their hair color is from blond and reddish to light blond, their eyes are light. Nordids are always dolichocephalic (elongated skull with prominent occiput). The face is oval, oblong, the jaw is narrow, graceful, the lips are thin, the thin nose with a high back can be either straight or slightly concave or with a hump, the superciliary arches are pronounced.

Pontic racial type

The Pontic racial type, also called Black Sea or Eastern Mediterranean, is one of the subspecies of the Mediterranean racial type. Distributed in Ukraine, in the south of Russia, in Georgia, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria and the Balkans (the most common type in all of Southeast Europe).

The Pontic type is characterized by a mesocephalic (medium-sized skull with a convex occiput), a narrow oblong face, a high nose bridge, a straight nose, narrow lips, dark hair pigmentation, and slightly dark skin. In general, facial features are soft. The physique is mesomorphic and ectomorphic. Growth is average with an upward trend.

Pontid subspecies - northern pontid, a mixture of Nordids with Pontids, is distinguished by a higher skull and a more elongated face. These are thin, tall brunettes, often with light eyes:

Alpine racial type

The Alpine race is a minor race within the Caucasoid race. Separated at the end of the 19th century. French anthropologist Georges Lapouge. Found throughout Eastern Europe. Outside of Eastern Europe, this racial type is found in the north of the Balkan Peninsula, in Switzerland, in the south of Germany and in the north of Italy. The Alpine race is distinguished by its wide distribution and great diversity.

Russian anthropologist V.V. Bunak proposed, in addition to the Alpine proper, to single out the Eastern Alpine, or Carpathian. In Ukraine, this racial type is widespread. For the Russian population, this type is not typical.

The Alpine race is characterized by medium and below average growth, mesomorphic and endomorphic physique. A low and wide face, a steep forehead with weakly pronounced brow ridges, severe brachycephaly (this is one of the shortest-headed Caucasians), a small thickened nose, dark pigmentation of hair and eyes, dark skin.

Dinaric racial type

The Dinaric racial type of southern Caucasians was named after the Dinaric Alps. The term was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century by the French anthropologist I. Deniker. Deniker identified the following features of the Dinaric race: tall (usually 190 cm and above in men), ectomorphic and mesomorphic build, short head, dark blond or black hair, straight or aquiline large nose, fair skin, broad face. Later, other researchers pointed to such typical characteristics as a slender physique, strong hair growth on the body and face, and a flat nape.

This type is most common among the inhabitants of the Balkans, but it is also found in Ukraine.

Subadriatic (Norian) type

The type identified by some anthropologists, called the Sub-Adriatic (I. Deniker) or Norian, or Noric (the name was given by V. Lebzelter), from the Roman province of Norik, is close to the Dinaric type, the Balkan Caucasian race.

I. Deniker described this type as subbrachycephalic, less often brachycephalic, of medium height, with brown hair, an average height of about 166 cm and a head index of 82-84. It is distributed in Champagne, Franche-Comte, Luxembourg, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, the Rhine provinces, in the north of the Grand Duchy of Baden, in eastern Bavaria and in southeastern Bohemia; found among Slovenes, and in one part of Lombardy and the Venetian region.

K. Kuhn described the Noric type as a light brachycephalic with a flat occiput, often found in southern Germany and elsewhere in central Europe. He considered this type to be a Nordic type, brachycephalized with a Dinaric admixture.

This type was also distinguished by Soviet anthropologists G. F. Debets (1958) and V. V. Bunak as part of the Central European race, separately from the Dinaric type.

The Italian anthropologist R. Biasutti in his monumental work "The Races and Peoples of the Earth" (Ital. Le razze e i popoli della terra, the first edition - 1939, the second - 1953 - 1960) singled out the race of Europids in the large Caucasoid race, and in it - the Adriatic race with two subraces: Padan and Noric.

In R. McCulloch's classification, the term "Norian type" (Noric) is synonymous with the term "sub-Nordic type".

Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller

Falsky type

Characteristics. The Falian race is characterized by the highest growth among Caucasians, a very hypersthenic (stocky) physique, mesodolichocephaly, broad shoulders, a wide massive lower jaw with a “strong-willed” chin, rather high cheekbones by European standards, a wide and low face, developed superciliary arches and an occipital protuberance, low rectangular eye sockets, gray or blue eyes and coarse, wavy blond hair of reddish hues.

Spreading. Characteristic of Westphalia (hence the name of the race); its representatives are also found in Scandinavia, mainly in southwestern Sweden, where the Ertebölle culture existed in antiquity. As you move further from the southwestern border inland, the percentage of people of this race decreases greatly.

Eastern Latvians:

- short stature

- brachycephaly

- Mongolian admixture

They are located between Western Latvians and Finnish-speaking peoples.

Mixing of Latvians with the Baltic peoples.

Latvians differ from Lithuanians:

- lower growth

- brachycephalic

- increases gracefulness

- moderate skin pigmentation

Finnish-speaking peoples: Ural-Lapponoid minor race (Khanty, Mansi, Komi, Mordvins, Moksha, Udmurts).

Moksha: dolichocephaly. Moksha à Subural / Middle Volga type

Turkic peoples:

- Vyatka-Kama type

- Astrakhan Tatars

- Kalmyks (the most Mongoloid)

Moldovans are close to Ukrainians - more intense pigmentation.

Gypsies: maximum pigmentation.
